Mazu

Born Lin Mo-niang in Fujian in the Song dynasty; protector of seafarers.

Mazu was born Lin Mo-niang on Meizhou Island, Fujian, in the Song dynasty. She is said to have saved sailors in storms, and after her death became the protector of those who travel by sea — the most widely worshipped goddess along Taiwan's coast.
